If you’re a regular wedding guest and feel like you’ve heard My Wish or Cinderella a few too many times, you’re definitely not alone. Don’t get me wrong—I love me some Rascal Flatts and Steven Curtis Chapman as much as the next gal, but there are definitely other songs about mother/son and father/daugther relationships out there for brides and grooms to dance with their parents to. Today we’re bringing you some of our favorite parent dance songs rarely heard at weddings!
1. I’ll Be Your Man – Zac Brown Band
This song is all about a dad always being there for his daughter. I’m not sure that most dads would be able to keep their eyes dry while dancing with their daughters while this is playing!
2. Daddy – Abby Anderson
This one is a real tear-jerker written from the perspective of a daughter! If your dad has set the example for you of what to look for in your soon-to-be-husband, this song would be a beautiful tribute to him during your dance.
3. I Loved Her First – Heartland
Okay, so this one is a bit more common at weddings! However, we have to say that it’s a classic for a reason. Spoken from a dad’s point of view to his daughter’s partner, it’s a great pick if your dad has a good relationship with your fiance.
4. She’s Somebody’s Daughter – Drew Baldridge
The lyrics say it all on this one! “She’s somebody’s daughter / She’s somebody’s everything / She’s somebody’s little girl / Even if she’s grown up and moved away / She’s somebody’s whole world / She’s somebody’s baby / And if you don’t treat her right / Hers won’t be the only heart you’re breaking.” I’m already tearing up!
5. You’ll Be In My Heart – Phil Collins
Talk about a classic Disney song! If you grew up watching Tarzan, you might love this song. But even if you’ve never heard it, it’s still worth listening to. What’s also great is that it can work as a song for either parent dance!
1. Forever Young – Rod Stewart
If dancing to a classic 80s ballad, synthesizers and all, seems like you and your mom’s style, you’ll love this song! This one could also work for a father/daughter dance.
2. Mother – Sugarland
You may have heard this country song at a wedding before, but it would make a beautiful tribute to your mom during your dance together!
3. Mother Like Mine – The Band Perry
Another classic country tribute to awesome moms! This one feels a tad less country and a bit more laid-back than “Mother” by Sugarland.
4. Bumblebee – ABBA
Hear us out… this song might be (or definitely is?) about climate change. But when one of our grooms danced to this with his mom at his wedding it was really hard to hold back tears! When played in the context of dancing with your mom on your wedding day, it’s not hard to see how the lyrics could voice the feelings of a mom watching her little one grow up.
5. In My Life – The Beatles
This classic jam can work for any parent dance or even your first dance as a couple! If country or 80s pop music aren’t quite your style, this one might be a winner.
